Low NOx Gas Conversions

Retrofitted Oil Burner

Fuel Flexibility for Minimum Cost Generation

  • Add Gas-Firing Capability to Tangential-Fired and Wall-Fired Boilers
  • Retain Major Burner Components
  • Low NOx Emissions
200 Mbtu/hr dual-register oil burner retrofitted with new gas spuds, flame stabilizer, V-Jet oil atomizer, and CTL Class 1 gas igniter.
Modify Existing Oil or Coal Burners to Add Gas-Firing Capability at a Fraction of the Cost of New Burners
Conversion of a 550 MW Oil-Fired Boiler Demonstrates Typical Results
  • 28 Burners Upgraded with Natural Gas and LN-REACH Oil Combustion Equipment.
  • Retained Full Load Capability without Convective Pass Modifications.
  • NOx Emissions of < 0.16 lb/Mbtu on Natural Gas with 15% OFA and 9% FGR (Baseline NOx = 0.6 lb/Mbtu).
  • NOx Emissions of < 0.25 LB/Mbtu on Oil with 15% OFA and 8% FGR (Baseline NOx = 0.55 LB/Mbtu, Fuel Nitrogen = 0.28%).
  • Opacity < 10% Over the Load Range on Oil.
  • CO Emissions < 100 ppm Throughout the Load Range.
  • Stable, Well-Anchored Flames Under All Conditions.

Gas-Fired Burner

Wall-Fired Burner Retrofit

Typical wall-fired burner retrofit: The primary elements consist of the gas manifold, pokers with spuds, flame stabilizer, oil gun retract, and gas igniter. Also shown here are sliding sleeve air registers for a dual-register burner to facilitate automated control of the combustion airflow, independent of swirl.

Coen's Performance and Environmental Services Approach

Coen's Performance and Environmental Services Scope
  • Define project objectives with the customer, including load, fuels, and emissions guarantee levels.
  • Conceptual and detailed engineering of combustion equipment modifications to retain major components wherever possible.
  • Integrate new combustion equipment with existing or new fuel supply systems, combustion controls and burner management systems (BMS).
  • Results: significant savings in cost and unit down time compared to full burner replacement.

  • Project manager and prime contractor for all combustion equipment.
  • Engineering of the combustion equipment, including new hardware and modifications to existing burners.
  • Fabrication and supply of all combustion hardware.
  • Supply of additional hardware and control elements as required for combustion air automation, flame detection, fuel control, oil gun retracts, and igniters.
  • Supervision of installation.
  • Commissioning of new equipment.
