Generating Station Retrofits to Coen Duct Burner

A generating station in California produced an unusually high turbine exhaust gas (TEG) velocity of approximately 13,000 ft/min in the burner area. This led to unreliable light-offs, nonstop maintenance by plant personnel and a continuous pilot to maintain flame stability. The plant needed a new duct burner to withstand this high velocity TEG steam, provide a 10:1 turndown ratio and supply good flame stability to meet increased demand for reliable power.

Solution

Coen's vertical element duct burner provided a unique retrofit solution. Engineered specifically to fit into the existing space, the accessible four gas inlets were split into eight vertical burner elements (See Figure 1). The new design also included a horizontal ribbon pilot upstream of the vertical elements that provided reliable burner light-off.

Coen's unique design easily fit into the small duct section while using the existing inlet piping. In addition, the vertical elements provided a superior balanced temperature profile going into the split vertical boiler.

Results

The Coen Duct Burner Retrofit exceeded all the performance guarantees for capacity, temperature profile, flame stability and turndown. The generating station now operates reliably and with confidence throughout the year.
